Apple Music brings Up Next Live to global cities this summer

Apple_Apple-Music-Up-Next-Live_King-Princess_070119_carousel.jpg.large

Apple today announced Up Next Live, a series of intimate performances from past and present Apple Music Up Next artists including Bad Bunny, Daniel Caesar, Khalid, Ashley McBryde, King Princess, Lewis Capaldi and Jessie Reyez. Each artist will perform for fans in one city, for one night only.
Apple Music Up Next is a monthly program showcasing the best new artists in the world. Each month, Apple Music tastemakers and editors identify one artist to feature, then utilize the power of the platform to raise awareness of that artist to Apple Music's growing audience of music fans. Apple Music Up Next also includes a deeply curated companion playlistfull of incredible new artists across genres from all over the world.
Each artist on the diverse Up Next Live roster has been featured as an Apple Music Up Next artist in the monthly program or through the playlist. All shows will be hosted after hours in local Apple stores in Milan, San Francisco, Brooklyn, Paris, London, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Apple stores frequently offer free creative sessions through Today at Apple and serve as the place where the local creative community can come together and share ideas, making them the perfect backdrop for Up Next Live. Performances kick off July 9 with global sensation Bad Bunny at Apple Piazza Liberty in Milan.
“The impact [of being part of Up Next] can be seen in everything, in numbers, in plays, in shows,” said Bad Bunny. “There are a lot of fans that, when I go out in the street in the US, people who do not speak Spanish, I think they will not know me and they stop me, they ask me for pictures and they sing my songs. It helped me very much to make myself known in a market different from mine, not only the USA, but in places where Spanish is not spoken or where perhaps Latin music does not dominate, exposing my music and giving people the opportunity to get to know what I do.”

Spotify is building shared-queue Social Listening

Spotify appears to be testing a "Social Listening" feature that lets friends control the music together. This is similar-ish to its collaborative playlist feature, but it contains a real-time component. The idea is that collaborators are listening to the same songs, together — whether physically in the same room, or apart.
Software engineer Jane Manchun Wong, who is known for discovering unreleased app features by digging through code, recently spotted the feature and posted about it on Twitter. Manchun Wong found the feature buried in Spotify's Android app code, which she combs through for "clues" of what the company is working on.
While Manchun Wong has found her way in, Social Listening is currently only available to Spotify employees. You can see screenshots of the feature in her tweets below.
Spotify-Social-Listening
A help screen describes Social Listening as “Listen to music together. 1. On your phone, play a song and select (Connected Devices). You’ll see a code at the bottom of the screen. 2. On your friend’s phone, select the same (Connected Devices) icon, tap SCAN CODE, and point the camera at your code. 3. Now you can control the music together.” You’ll then see friends who are part of your Social Listening session listed in the Connected Devices menu. Users can also copy and share a link to join their Social Listening session that starts with the URL prefix https://open.spotify.com/socialsession/. Note that Spotify never explicitly says that playback will be synchronized.
Spotify-Listen-With-Friends
With streaming apps largely having the same music catalog and similar $9.99 per month premium pricing, they have to compete on discovery and user experience. Spotify has long been in the lead here with its algorithmically personalized Discover Weekly playlists, which were promptly copied by Apple and SoundCloud.

‘Game of Thrones’ hits record 19.3 million viewers in series finale despite fan backlash

Despite high criticism from fans, the final episode of “Game of Thrones” shattered single-night viewing records Sunday, with 19.3 million tuning in to watch the finale.
The final season of HBO’s television adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” was widely criticized by fans who felt the pacing and its treatment of previous character developments were not up to par.

Still, the show continued to have record-breaking viewership. Each episode, save for one, topped viewer counts from the season seven finale, which was the series high prior to season eight’s release.
Each year “Game of Thrones” has seen its audience grow, a rarity for television shows. Typically, a series will lose viewership over the course of a run. The eighth season had high viewership because it was the show’s last. More than a decade of storytelling was coming to an end, and everyone wanted to know what happened.
While some fans of the long-running fantasy drama felt satisfied by the show’s final bow, others were quick to express their displeasure with how events unfolded. One of the chief complaints surrounding the eighth and final season was its pacing and its treatment of previous character developments.
While the first six seasons all contained 10 episodes, season seven was comprised of only seven installments and season eight had only six. The truncated nature of the final season seemed to have played a major factor in fan dissatisfaction. Plot lines that may have been developed further given more time fell flat for many longtime viewers of the show.

Spotify is first to 100 million paid subscribers

More than 100 million users worldwide now pay for Spotify Premium, the company has announced. Spotify reached the milestone by growing paid subscribers by 32-percent year-on-year. Including free subscribers, Spotify now has a total of 217 million monthly active users worldwide. That includes two million Indian users who joined after the company launched its service there in February.
Globally, the numbers put Spotify well ahead of Apple Music, its closest competitor, who reportedly had 50 million paid users worldwide at the beginning of April. However, in the US Apple’s music streaming service in winning, according to the Wall Street Journal, with 28 million subscribers compared to Spotify’s 26 million.
QQ截图20190430154043
Spotify’s latest earnings also further illuminates the company’s podcasting ambitions. The company says it intends to develop a better advertising model for podcasts, which will include better “targeting, measurement, and reporting capabilities.” This suggests the company plans to develop ways of letting podcast producers place different ads in a podcast depending on the user being targeted, similar to the ads played during ad-supported music listening. Spotify recently acquired the podcasting companies Gimlet Media, Anchor, and Parcast, and currently offers a quarter of a million podcasting titles on the streaming platform.
By the end of this quarter, Spotify says it expects to have 222 to 228 million users, including between 107 and 110 million paid subscribers. The company also says that voice speakers are a critical area for its growth. Last year Spotify ran a promotion where it gave away a free Google Home Mini speaker to every family account subscriber. However, the company’s rumored first-party speaker hardware is yet to materialize.
Spotify is still losing money despite its subscriber growth. The company posted a loss of €142 million ($158.3 million) for the January to March quarter, compared with a loss of €169 million in the same period last year.

Alexa Support for Apple Music Expands to Sonos Speakers

Amazon Echo devices have been able to use Alexa-based voice commands to control Apple Music since December, but the feature has been limited to Amazon's own devices until today.
Sonos One and Sonos Beam owners in the United States, United Kingdom, and Ireland are now also able to use Alexa to control Apple Music after adding the Apple Music skill to the Alexa app.
123

To get Alexa controls for Apple Music on Sonos, users will need to update to the newest version of the Sonos app, enable the Apple Music skill in the separate Amazon Alexa app, and link an Apple Music account.

From there, Sonos owners will be able to use commands like "Play My Chill Mix on Apple Music," or "Play Beats 1 Radio on Apple Music."

It's not yet clear if other Alexa-enabled devices will also be gaining support for Apple Musiccontrols in the future, but right now, the feature is available on all Amazon Echo and Fire TV devices along with the Sonos One and Sonos Beam.

Cast Apple Music to your Chromecast, TV or Google Home speaker, maybe

apple-music-chrome
A recent teardown of the Apple Music app on Android revealed that the iPhone-maker is working Chromecast support into its music streaming service.

As with all APK teardowns, it’s important to remember that uncovered features are often works-in-progress and may not be representative of the final product. Further, features may never see completion. With that said, let’s take a look.

Apple released Apple Music 2.8 at the beginning of the week with support for Chromebooks and a revamped ‘Browse’ tab that featured more editorial highlights. However, the company quickly released update 2.8.1 and 2.8.2 to fix a bug that caused the app to “unexpectedly close or fail after an upgrade for some users.”

9to5Google decompiled that latter APK, which rolled out on March 29th, and found four code strings related to Chromecast. These strings included two application IDs.

Developers receive these IDs when they register an application for Cast support with Google. Registering allows developers to add custom colours and branding on TV screens and smart displays. However, it’s odd that there are two different IDs.

This likely means users will be able to send music playing in the Android app to a Google Home speaker, smart display, Android TV or Chromecast. Further, depending on how Apple implements support, users should be able to control playback from Apple Music on their phone.

Earlier this year, Apple Music for Assistant briefly appeared in the Google Assistant settings page alongside YouTube Music, Google Play Music and Spotify. Google later removed Apple Music, noting the appearance was related to a software bug.

The upcoming Cast support could herald the future release of Assistant integration as well. While similar in purpose, the main difference between Cast support and Assistant integration is the latter doesn’t require the Apple Music app. Users can just ask Assistant to play a song from Apple Music.

Finally, version 2.8.2 of Apple Music does not include Cast support, just the beginnings of its integration. Users should expect that to come in a future release when Apple finishes it.

Apple Music Now Available on Amazon Fire TV

Good news for Amazon Fire TV with Apple Music users, there is no need to convert Apple Music and then upload to Amazon Music Unlimited. You can directly ask Alexa to play songs from the Apple Music service.
Amazon today expanded its Apple Music integration to the Amazon Fire TV, allowing Fire TV owners to ask Alexa to play songs from the Apple Music service.

According to CNBC, Apple Music on the Amazon Fire TV is available starting today.

The expansion comes three months after Apple allowed Apple Music to be streamed on Amazon Echo speakers using the Alexa voice assistant.
On the Fire TV, users can use commands like "Alexa, play music by Stevie Nicks," or "Alexa, play a Fleetwood Mac album" to play content directly from Apple Music.
It can be enabled by going to the Alexa app on an Android or iOS device and activating the Apple Music skill. Those who have already set up Apple Music with Alexa for Echo devices will not need to repeat the steps.
Right now, Apple Music is limited to the Fire TV and Amazon Echo speakers, though it may be expanded to third-party Alexa devices in the future.
Apple's effort to allow Apple Music to be streamed on third-party platforms is part of a deeper push to grow services revenue. Apple is also planning to expand iTunes to Samsung Smart TVs in the form of an iTunes app, and AirPlay 2 functionality is being built into recent smart TV sets from a number of manufacturers like Sony and LG.

Google Home isn't getting Apple Music, at least for now

Q4o8Snxa4JdziEy9K2iRQS-970-80
For a second there it looked like Google Home was gearing up to partner with one of its major rivals in home audio and music streaming: Apple Music.
An iOS user noticed that Apple Music had joined the ranks of compatible music streaming services listed on the Google Home app, alongside Spotify, Deezer, Pandora, YouTube Music – and naturally, Google Play.
The Apple Music integration didn't seem to be functional yet, but the fact it was appearing on the iOS app suggested the launch was imminent.
However, we now have official word from Google about whether Apple Music is really coming to Google Home – and it's probably not happening.
As reported by Bloomberg, Google blamed the appearance of Apple's music service on the Google Home iOS app as a bug, caused by confusion with the Google Assistant AI – which does work with Apple Music (say through a smartphone) though not through the Google Home speaker itself.
In order to play Apple Music with Google Home, we need Macsome iTunes Converter’s help. As you know that all the files via Apple Music are DRM protected. That is to say, you can’t freely play these Apple Music downloaded files via Google home freely, unless you can remove DRM from Apple Music files and then upload the converted files to Google Play Music and then you can use Google Home to play the converted music files easily and freely.

SoundCloud Now Lets You Distribute Your Music to Spotify, Apple Music

SoundCloud
SoundCloud is getting into the distribution game. A new set of tools in their SoundCloud Premier program, announced today, allow SoundCloud Pro or Pro Unlimited users to distribute their music to other platforms that aren’t SoundCloud, including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, YouTube Music, and other streaming services.
Artists that use the new SoundCloud Premier distribution feature “keep 100% of their rights, keep 100% of their distribution royalties from third-party services, and pay no distribution fees,” according to a press release.
Last fall, Spotify announced that it would begin allowing artists to upload music to its streaming service directly instead of going through distribution services. In October 2018, the Verge reported on terms in the SoundCloud Premier contract that would prohibit artists from pursuing legal action against the company under any circumstances, as well as ambiguous language with regards to payout schedules for artists. (SoundCloud subsequently amendedthe contract to address that report.)

American Airlines will be able to stream Apple Music over in-flight Wi-Fi for free

apple-music-takes-flight-on-american-airlines-playlist-a
Apple Music is taking flight in more ways than one.
The company announced Tuesday a partnership with American Airlines that will allow Apple Music subscribers to stream songs, playlists and music videos on any domestic flight equipped with ViaSat satellite Wi-Fi for free. This makes American the first commercial airline to provide exclusive access to Apple Music through complimentary Wi-Fi.

"For most travelers, having music to listen to on the plane is just as important as anything they pack in their suitcases," said Oliver Schusser, vice president of Apple Music in a press release. "With the addition of Apple Music on American flights, we are excited that customers can now enjoy their music in even more places."
Those who subscribe to Apple Music will be able to access the service on Apple devices equipped with the platform, including iPhones, iPads, Macs and Android phones. Those who don't have a subscription, however, could sign up for a free three-month trial once on board. The new deal begins Friday.
"Our guests want to make the most of their time when flying us. That's why we're investing in faster Wi-Fi, a variety of entertainment options, and why we're so excited to introduce Apple Music to more of our customers," said Janelle Anderson, vice president of global marketing at American, in the press release.
Apple Music's partnership with American comes months after integrating the service with the Amazon Echo. Earlier in January, Verizon announced its plans to include Apple Music subscriptions in some of its top-tier U.S. data plans.
Apple Music's subscriber count still lags behind Spotify's 87 million subscribers recorded last November. While Spotify has a free version of their service, Apple Music only has a three-month free trial.

During the company's most recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said iTunes reached its highest quarterly revenue thanks to Apple Music, which now has over 50 million paid subscribers. The app helped Apple's services revenue reach $10.9 billion in the December quarter, which is up 19 percent from the previous year.
"We not only generated our highest global services revenue ever, but we also had all-time records across multiple categories of services including the App Store, Apple Pay, cloud services and our App Store search ad business and we had a December quarter record for AppleCare," Cook said during the call.

Users will be able to Block Bands on Spotify

industry-insider---spotify
Go ahead and get the “Thank U, Next” joke out of your system. I’ll wait. Because that’s exactly what you’ll be doing with Spotify’s latest feature: telling various bands you can’t stand that you no longer want them to pop up on the curated playlists you otherwise enjoy.
And this isn’t just about annoying music. There are very legitimate reasons why you might have a moral objection to certain artists—known serial abusers, for example—and you’d rather they just go away for good. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to boot them out of your Spotify life right now.
As Thurrott reported yesterday, Spotify appears to be testing the new artist-blocking feature “with a smaller group of users.” I’m not running any alpha or betas of the Spotify app, but I noticed that I have the feature. You should check, too, as turning it on for any artist you dislike will ensure you don’t have to hear them on Spotify ever again. As Mehedi Hassan describes:
“This means it will block music from that artist on your personal library, playlists, automatically curated playlists, charts, radios, and everything else. In fact, you won’t be able to manually play music from an artist you’ve blocked even if you wanted to — and you’d have to unblock an artist before you can play a certain track from them. Blocking an artist doesn’t block tracks they have featured on, however.”
You would think that it would be easy to block an artist the minute one of their songs pops up, but the process is a bit more involved than that. When you tap on the triple-dot icon next to a song’s name in the Spotify app, the context menu doesn’t give you a way to block the artist outright.
Instead, you’ll have to scroll down a bit and tap on “View artist,” or just visit an artist’s Spotify page directly in the app. (Though I can access artist-blocking features on my iOS Spotify app, I didn’t see them on the web-based player or the Android app when I wrote this article.)
Once there, you’ll have to tap the same triple-dot icon in the upper-right corner of the app to access the contextual menu for the artist in question. If you have access to Spotify’s blocking feature, you’ll see a new option that reads, “Don’t play this artist.” Tap that, and you’ll be (almost entirely) free from them on Spotify—or, at least, until you have a change of heart (or become obsessed with a new single). If that happens, you’ll have to visit the artist’s page again to remove your block.
And it’s important to note that this “block” isn’t like to a Facebook block, where you’ll never see that which you block on the service. When I blocked Abba on Spotify, for example, they still appeared on Jonathan Van Ness’ (incredible) playlists. However, when I ran through the playlist, Spotify automatically skipped any and all Abba songs. (Sorry, Jonathan!)
There’s no word on when Spotify might roll this feature out to more users, so keep checking the app if you don’t have the blocking ability. You could also try enrolling in the service’s alpha or beta tests, if you want speedier access to whatever the company is working on.
