Cast Apple Music to your Chromecast, TV or Google Home speaker, maybe

A recent teardown of the Apple Music app on Android revealed that the iPhone-maker is working Chromecast support into its music streaming service.

As with all APK teardowns, it’s important to remember that uncovered features are often works-in-progress and may not be representative of the final product. Further, features may never see completion. With that said, let’s take a look.

Apple released Apple Music 2.8 at the beginning of the week with support for Chromebooks and a revamped ‘Browse’ tab that featured more editorial highlights. However, the company quickly released update 2.8.1 and 2.8.2 to fix a bug that caused the app to “unexpectedly close or fail after an upgrade for some users.”

9to5Google decompiled that latter APK, which rolled out on March 29th, and found four code strings related to Chromecast. These strings included two application IDs.

Developers receive these IDs when they register an application for Cast support with Google. Registering allows developers to add custom colours and branding on TV screens and smart displays. However, it’s odd that there are two different IDs.

This likely means users will be able to send music playing in the Android app to a Google Home speaker, smart display, Android TV or Chromecast. Further, depending on how Apple implements support, users should be able to control playback from Apple Music on their phone.

Earlier this year, Apple Music for Assistant briefly appeared in the Google Assistant settings page alongside YouTube Music, Google Play Music and Spotify. Google later removed Apple Music, noting the appearance was related to a software bug.

The upcoming Cast support could herald the future release of Assistant integration as well. While similar in purpose, the main difference between Cast support and Assistant integration is the latter doesn’t require the Apple Music app. Users can just ask Assistant to play a song from Apple Music.

Finally, version 2.8.2 of Apple Music does not include Cast support, just the beginnings of its integration. Users should expect that to come in a future release when Apple finishes it.

Apple Music Now Available on Amazon Fire TV

Amazon today expanded its Apple Music integration to the Amazon Fire TV, allowing Fire TV owners to ask Alexa to play songs from the Apple Music service.

According to CNBC, Apple Music on the Amazon Fire TV is available starting today.

The expansion comes three months after Apple allowed Apple Music to be streamed on Amazon Echo speakers using the Alexa voice assistant.
On the Fire TV, users can use commands like "Alexa, play music by Stevie Nicks," or "Alexa, play a Fleetwood Mac album" to play content directly from Apple Music.
It can be enabled by going to the Alexa app on an Android or iOS device and activating the Apple Music skill. Those who have already set up Apple Music with Alexa for Echo devices will not need to repeat the steps.
Right now, Apple Music is limited to the Fire TV and Amazon Echo speakers, though it may be expanded to third-party Alexa devices in the future.
Apple's effort to allow Apple Music to be streamed on third-party platforms is part of a deeper push to grow services revenue. Apple is also planning to expand iTunes to Samsung Smart TVs in the form of an iTunes app, and AirPlay 2 functionality is being built into recent smart TV sets from a number of manufacturers like Sony and LG.

Google Home isn't getting Apple Music, at least for now

For a second there it looked like Google Home was gearing up to partner with one of its major rivals in home audio and music streaming: Apple Music.
An iOS user noticed that Apple Music had joined the ranks of compatible music streaming services listed on the Google Home app, alongside Spotify, Deezer, Pandora, YouTube Music – and naturally, Google Play.
The Apple Music integration didn't seem to be functional yet, but the fact it was appearing on the iOS app suggested the launch was imminent.
However, we now have official word from Google about whether Apple Music is really coming to Google Home – and it's probably not happening.

SoundCloud Now Lets You Distribute Your Music to Spotify, Apple Music

SoundCloud is getting into the distribution game. A new set of tools in their SoundCloud Premier program, announced today, allow SoundCloud Pro or Pro Unlimited users to distribute their music to other platforms that aren’t SoundCloud, including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, YouTube Music, and other streaming services.
Artists that use the new SoundCloud Premier distribution feature “keep 100% of their rights, keep 100% of their distribution royalties from third-party services, and pay no distribution fees,” according to a press release.
Last fall, Spotify announced that it would begin allowing artists to upload music to its streaming service directly instead of going through distribution services. In October 2018, the Verge reported on terms in the SoundCloud Premier contract that would prohibit artists from pursuing legal action against the company under any circumstances, as well as ambiguous language with regards to payout schedules for artists. (SoundCloud subsequently amendedthe contract to address that report.)
